At a glance
| Phuket | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Size and pace | large island, city, many districts | smaller, quieter, village feel |
| Getting there | international airport, direct long-haul links | small airport, fewer and pricier flights, or ferry |
| Villa price level | wide: entry villas to ultra-luxury | asking prices vary widely; few published averages |
| Schools and hospitals | several international schools, large private hospitals | fewer options |
Figures are ranges from 2026 relocation and market guides, which disagree; they show the gap between places, not exact prices.
Everyday life
Phuket has a real city (Phuket Town), big supermarkets, several international schools, large private hospitals and an airport with direct flights to Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia. That also means traffic and construction.
Samui is a fraction of the size, slower and greener, with good beaches and a strong villa scene, but fewer schools and specialist doctors, and most flights go through Bangkok on a single airline at a premium. If you will fly often or need a big school, Phuket; if you work remotely and want calm, Samui is worth a look.
Buying a villa on each island
The ownership rules are the same nationwide: condos freehold within the foreign quota, villas usually on registered 30-year land leases. Samui has little published price data, so we do not quote an island average; compare actual listings instead, such as these sea-view villas in Chaweng Noi (5 bedrooms, 4 bedrooms). Phuket's range is wider, from entry villas to some of Asia's most expensive.
The bigger difference is resale: Phuket has more buyers, more agents and more transactions, so the pool of potential buyers is larger, although that does not guarantee a quick sale of any particular property. See Phuket property market 2026 and can a foreigner buy a house in Phuket.
Questions buyers ask
Is Koh Samui better than Phuket to live?
It depends on what you need. Samui is quieter and smaller; Phuket has more international schools, hospitals and direct flights. Families and frequent flyers usually prefer Phuket.
