Cost of Living in Phuket (2026): Monthly Budgets

By Sam Bocker, Phuket property consultant4 min readReviewed October 17, 2026

Relocation guides published in 2026 put a comfortable single budget in Phuket at roughly 35,000–55,000 THB a month and a couple at 55,000–100,000 THB, but they differ on whether rent is included. Add your rent from the area table, and for children add international school tuition of roughly 300,000–600,000 THB a year each at established schools.

In short

  1. 01Guides put a comfortable single budget at about 35,000–55,000 THB a month; check whether rent is inside it.
  2. 02Couples: about 55,000–100,000 THB a month in the same guides.
  3. 03Rent is the biggest variable: a one-bedroom asks about 8,000–18,000 THB in Phuket Town and 22,000–45,000 near Laguna.
  4. 04International school tuition at established schools is roughly 300,000–600,000 THB a year, plus entry fees.
  5. 05Local food and markets keep groceries cheap; imported food and dining in beach areas cost Western prices.

Monthly budgets and what they include

Relocation and expat guides published in 2026 (see sources) give these ranges. They disagree, mainly because some include rent and some do not, and none include school fees in the couple figures.

Build your own budget

  1. Rent: take your area from the housing table below.
  2. Electricity: the bill that varies most; ask the landlord for real past bills.
  3. Food, transport, insurance and leisure: here the guide ranges above are a fair guide.
  4. Children: add tuition from the school's own fee schedule.

Housing: the biggest line

Families usually rent a three-bedroom pool villa: from about 35,000 THB in the south to 160,000 THB on the west coast. Details and the 2025 deposit rules are in how much it costs to rent in Phuket.

Food, utilities and getting around

  • Food. Living on Thai food from markets and local restaurants keeps a single person's food budget low; relocation guides put groceries for one at roughly USD 200–250 a month. Imported cheese, wine and Western restaurants in beach areas cost the same or more than at home.
  • Electricity. The bill that surprises newcomers. A single person in a condo pays a few thousand baht a month; a villa with air conditioning in every room can pay many times that. Ask previous tenants or the landlord for real bills.
  • Transport. Most residents drive a scooter or a car. Ride-hailing apps work across the island but distances are long and roads are hilly.
  • Health insurance. Private hospitals in Phuket are good and priced like private care; insurance is worth budgeting for.

School fees: the family budget driver

Tuition at Phuket's established international schools is roughly 300,000–600,000 THB a year depending on the year group, before one-off entry and capital fees that commonly add tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand baht. Guides quote British International School Phuket at about 420,000–780,000 THB a year by year group, HeadStart at about 280,000–680,000 and QSI at about 340,000–600,000.

The main schools sit in Koh Kaew (British International School Phuket), Vichit and Cherngtalay (HeadStart's Chaofah City and Cherngtalay campuses) and Thalang (UWC Thailand), which is why families concentrate in Bang Tao, Cherngtalay, Kathu and Koh Kaew.

Phuket compared with Bangkok and Chiang Mai

Chiang Maiabout 20,000–51,000 THBabout 8,000–20,000 THB

Phuket and Bangkok land in a similar range; Chiang Mai is clearly cheaper. See Phuket vs Bangkok and Phuket vs Chiang Mai for the full comparison.

Questions buyers ask

How much money do you need to live in Phuket?

Relocation guides put a comfortable single budget at about 35,000–55,000 THB a month and a couple at 55,000–100,000 THB, but some include rent and some do not. Add your rent for the area, and add school fees for children.

Is Phuket more expensive than Bangkok?

Overall budgets in 2026 guides are similar. Beach-area rents and restaurants in Phuket can match central Bangkok, while inland Phuket is cheaper. Chiang Mai is clearly cheaper than both.

What is the cost of living in Phuket per month in USD?

At 33.5 THB to the dollar, the 2026 guide ranges are about USD 1,045–1,640 a month for one person living comfortably and about USD 1,640–2,985 for a couple. Check whether your rent is already inside the figure you use.

How much are international schools in Phuket?

Roughly 300,000–600,000 THB a year at established schools depending on the year group, plus one-off entry and capital fees. Guides disagree, so take the current fee schedule from each school.
